Overview / purpose of the role

We are seeking an experienced Senior External Affairs Manager to lead on communications, events and wider public engagements, alongside stakeholder engagement efforts across key external audiences. This role plays a critical part in shaping CGP’s public presence and multiplying the impact of our events. The ideal candidate brings significant external affairs experience, including excellent communication skills and the ability to represent the organisation with professionalism and credibility.

Reporting to: Director of Advocacy

Responsibilities

Communications

  • Draft high-impact external communications, including speeches, op-eds, press statements, and presentations.

  • Manage messaging, talking points, and stakeholder communications for leadership and coalition voices.

  • Act as the first point of contact for media and press enquiries.

  • Prepare a high-quality monthly external newsletter, briefings and speaking notes for the senior team and external stakeholders ahead of media appearances. 

  • Lead on pitching proactive and reactive articles, broadcast and media comments to relevant outlets. 

  • Ensure effective coordination between internal teams to support external strategies and commitments.

  • Act as the point-person for journalistic enquiries and outreach.

Events Management

  • Design, plan and manage CGP’s busy and ambitious events programme in collaboration with colleagues. 

  • Lead on the delivery of a selection of CGP events, including public events, roundtables, private dinners, and CGP’s party conference programme.

  • Secure event sponsorships for our party conference programmes and select events throughout the year.

  • Recruit senior speakers and be the first point of contact for CGP’s events programme with suppliers, venues and speakers. 

  • Lead on the evaluation of CGP’s events programme, ensuring learnings from events are understood and well-documented. 

  • Ensure each CGP event is well-attended and tailored to our target audience of speakers, guests and attendees.

Relationship building and Stakeholder Management 

  • Represent CGP at parliamentary events, receptions and external meetings. 

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for key external stakeholders, ensuring consistent and effective engagement.

Line Management

This role has direct line management responsibilities for our External Affairs Assistant. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting them in their role, providing guidance when necessary and facilitating their long-term professional development and growth.

Person specification

Essential

  • An interest in international development, or defence and diplomacy, and supportive of UK leadership in international development.

  • A strong interest in UK politics. 

  • Demonstrable experience of working with the media.

  • Experience of working on events and managing projects. 

  • Previous experience working in a communications role. 

  • Excellent organisational and time management skills with very strong attention to detail. 

  • Independent and proactive worker who can take responsibility for projects through to completion. 

  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills. 

  • Strong IT skills.

  • As part of a small team, the successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively and flexibly to support colleagues across all of our work streams during busy periods. 

Desirable

  • Knowledge or experience working in international development.
