Overview / purpose of the role
We are recruiting the maternity cover for our Director of Advocacy. This role is a pivotal senior leadership position reporting to the Chief Executive, and serves to drive CGP’s advocacy outputs, strategy and impact. This role will oversee CGP’s Advocacy function, managing a high-performing team and leading on the delivery of effective parliamentary engagement, impactful communications, CGP’s programme of events and delivery of overseas delegations. The role requires an experienced leader who can step into a well-established role to maintain momentum across all CGP’s core advocacy activities.
Reporting to: Chief Executive
Line management responsibilities: Two direct reports, overseeing a team of five.
Responsibilities
Working closely with the Chief Executive and Associate Director for Operations and Strategic Partnerships, to provide leadership to the organisation.
Act as an effective deputy for the CEO, and spokesperson for CGP with key stakeholders across politics, business, civil society, military and faith groups and responsible for maintaining CGP’s links to the international development sector.
Oversee a team of five high-performing staff with two direct line reports. Line management of the Head of Public Affairs and the Senior External Affairs Manager.
Strategic and operational management of the Advocacy Team. Lead and manage CGP’s annual plan of advocacy activities, ensuring effective team delivery that is strategic, results-orientated and successfully meets organisational and funding objectives. This includes CGP’s communications, events, media, advocacy, overseas visits, parliamentary and research strands.
Ensure all CGP’s advocacy outputs are delivered to the highest of standards, aligned and politically strategic.
Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective funders, providing political analysis and regular updates on CGP’s key workstreams and impact to support long-term funding relationships.
Lead on CGP’s Labour-facing engagements, including engaging with key stakeholders, overseeing the delivery of Labour-focused events, and attending Labour Party Conference.
Represent CGP and maintain strong relationships with key funders, members, governance and partners. This includes ensuring CGP is successfully meeting its grant deliverables and reporting requirements.
Person specification
Essential
Strong relationships with politicians on the centre-left of politics and the ability and willingness to work with all UK political parties.
A thorough understanding of the UK Labour party, and British politics.
Experience with Strategic Advocacy, designing and delivering high-impact advocacy strategies, including media engagements and events.
Strong line management capabilities, experience leading multiple high-performing individuals including conducting performance reviews, and supporting a team with learning and development.
Exceptional relationship-building skills with senior figures across politics, and experience serving as an organisational spokesperson.
Ability to step into an established team, maintain momentum and oversee and deliver existing plans.
An interest in international development, or defence and diplomacy, and supportive of UK leadership in international development.
As part of a small team, the successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively and flexibly to support colleagues across all of our work streams during busy periods.
Desirable
Experience overseeing and coordinating overseas delegations.
Crisis and risk management experience, including handling sensitive political issues, reputational risks and rapid-response in media engagement.
Senior leadership experience and a proven track record of operating at a senior management level, contributing to organisational strategy, and working alongside a Chief Executive or Senior Leadership.
Experience of working with budgets and financial processes.
