Parliamentary Visit to Kenya

February 2023

The Coalition for Global Prosperity hosted a cross-party Parliamentary visit to Kenya in partnership with World Vision and supported by the Eleanor Crook Foundation. We were joined by Maggie Throup MP and The Rt Hon Liam Byrne MP.

During the visit, the delegation visited a UK-funded primary and secondary school in various stages of development in Narok County. School leaders spoke of the difficulties of school retention and the impact of climate change on education. The delegation discussed with local leaders, Kenyan Members of Parliament, parents and children the devastating effects of the drought currently affecting the Horn of Africa following six consecutive years of failed rains.

The Members of Parliament also spoke with representatives from the UK High Commission in Nairobi about the UK’s role in the region and development priorities. The delegation met with the Kenya branch of the World Bank to discuss the positive impact of the World Bank’s projects and future plans in the country.

Throughout the visit, the delegation also discussed and witnessed China’s strong influence and impact in the region, notably their investment in infrastructure, including railways and roads.
